The standards are everywhere these days when it comes to education, and for good reason. Standards ensure that all children are learning the same content as students in other districts. Here is a great video explaining the Common Core standards. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me!
Aligned Standards
Here are are the standards I aligned our unit on measurement to. Notice there are both mathematical and language arts standards. It is important to integrate both sets of standards into activities and lessons. I will link and refer to these standards throughout the website so that you can see how I am aligning the lessons and activities. I typically focus on two or three standards for each unit. Even though more standards may apply, they are not the central focus of the unit at that time.
Common Core Standards
Mathematics- CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.A.1: Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object. CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.A.2: Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Language Arts- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.7: Participate in shared research and writing projects CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. |
Pennsylvania State Standards
Mathematics- 2.3.1.A: Demonstrate that a single object has attributes that can be measured. 2.3.1.B: Use concrete objects to measure length by repeating and the number of nonstandard or standard units. 1.5.1.B: Develop content appropriate for the topic.
Language Arts- 1.4.1.B: Write informational pieces using illustrations when relevant (e.g., descriptions, letters, instructions). 1.6.1.A: Listen actively and respond to others in small and large group situations with appropriate questions and ideas |
