Vocabulary Activities
Here are four great vocabulary activities to do with your child. Working on vocabulary at home in different contexts will help students master the words. Two of these activities are online and two are meant to be done with paper and pencil! Have fun with these activities!
Paper Vocabulary Activities
Four Square Vocabulary Chart
This activity is great for learning vocabulary words. It helps students learn the words as a whole and how the word relates to other things. In order to do this activity, take a piece of paper, fold it in half twice and then unfold it. Then, draw a circle in the middle of the paper and put the vocabulary word in it. Next, write the definition in the top left corner. After that, use it in the sentence in the top right corner. Then, write a synonym and antonym in the bottom left corner. Finally, draw a picture of the word in the bottom right corner.
Measurement Bingo
Measurement bingo is a fun, highly adaptable activity for children. You can print a blank bingo card and have the child fill it in or print and use the bingo card located to the right. Read the definition and have the student put a chip on that vocabulary word. This activity requires recall of vocabulary words and definitions. Click on the bingo card to download the file. |
Online Activities
Spelling City is a great online resource for learning vocabulary words. For our current list of vocabulary words click here. Students can do activities such as teach me, play a game, vocabulary test, or flashcards. It is great to have speakers or head phones because Spelling City will read the words, spell them and use them in a sentence out loud. This will help children master the words. This is a great activity for children when they have an extra couple minutes after school or while riding in the car.
Padlet- Online Word Wall
Here is our online word wall created using Padlet. We use Padlet for many activities in the classroom that involve concepts that we need to learn and organize. Students collaborate to create a word wall of this unit's vocabulary words. To use Padlet, double click on the word wall below and start typing. See the video below if you need help. I have already included the vocabulary words.
The students should add in the definitions, organize words into categories, use the words in sentences, match words to definitions and add images to the word wall.
Remember, everyone can see your changes.
